Mediterranean House
The frost-sensitive plants from the Mediterranean region, South Africa, California and Australia spend the winter in the Mediterranean House. In summer, the house is empty and used for events.
Silver tree family
The most important collection in this greenhouse area includes species from the silver tree family (Proteaceae). Currently, over 30 different genera of this family are cultivated, including the macadamia nut (Macadamia ternifolia).
The King Protea (Protea cynaroides) is one of the most interesting and beautiful plants in South Africa. It is the national flower of the Republic of South Africa.
The Bonn Botanic Gardens have one of the largest collections of Proteaceae in Germany.
Toromiro
The toromiro (Sophora toromiro) is the only native tree species on Easter Island. This species was considered extinct since the late 1950s.
In 1988, a specimen of toromiro was discovered in the Bonn Botanic Gardens. The news of this discovery created high waves. Since then, this specimen has been propagated by various methods and given to other botanic gardens.
In 1995, 160 toromiros were brought from the Botanic Gardens of Gothenburg and Bonn to Easter Island, where they were enthusiastically received by the local population. By now, they are growing well at home on Easter Island.
